Congratulations rockstar! You made it through pregnancy and birth and now you are supposed to be milked like a cow?
Our bodies are amazing, but sometimes breastfeeding isn’t as easy as you think it will be. Let’s break it down so we can get that baby fed!
- Delivery. You go, girl! That is incredibly hard and you got through it so cross that off your list! Take a second to be proud and feel accomplished for how strong you are.
- Colostrum (pre-milk). This comes in before your actual milk supply. This is nutrient-packed milk but not a whole lot of volume. You’ll see this pre-milk till day 3 or 4.
- Eager beaver stage. The first couple hours of your baby’s life they will likely be alert and ready to eat. Nursing within the first hour of life is highly recommended. This is the “Golden Hour.” You have a new life in your hands, engorged boobs, a sore body, and then- bam! Time to breastfeed. You don’t have much time to catch your breath! Here’s what you need to know:
- You are going to feel uncomfortable! This is new and weird!
- Try new positions. Prioritize your comfort. Don’t bend over backwards to try a hold/position that isn’t working for you.
- Ask questions to the hospital staff. You may not get the same answer from everyone, but use a combination of advice to use what works for you!
